There are two main categories of car modifications, these being modifications for looks and modifications to increase the speed of your vehicle. Both types of modification will increase your annual premium but at different levels. For example, a set of alloy wheels won’t make the car go faster, however, depending upon the area you live in, will make your car far more desirable to thieves hence an increase in premium. However engine modifications will make your car faster
and more likely to be involved in a high speed accident again increasing premiums.
Always make sure you declare every modification made to your vehicle whilst obtaining car insurance quotes. You can then decide whether or not to change the car back to its original factory state if the premiums are too high because of the modifications.
Powerseeker Tip 1: We tried many car insurance companies and found that Admiral Car Insurance did not increase premiums.
Powerseeker Tip 2: For some reason car insurance companies will increase premiums for alloy wheels. Example – 35 year old male with full no claims bonus gets charged an extra £60 per annum. A younger driver with the same alloy wheels with less no claims bonus can be quoted 5 times as much equating to £300 extra per annum on the car insurance policy premium
