Life Insurance analysis revealed that the costs of a level term insurance policy have reduced for the second year in a row.
Although it’s still best to shop around if you are thinking of taking out Life Insurance as there is a significant gap in the price between the most competitive and the most expensive policies. For example, data shows that an average saving of £91 can be made for level term insurance over the period of one year just by taking a little time to choose between policies. This equates to a difference of 42% between the most expensive and most competitive insurance premium.
Helen Williams, Sainsbury’s Life Insurance manager said, “The fact that life insurance premiums continue to be competitively priced is great news for consumers,”
“But this research clearly shows that in order to get the best level of life insurance cover for your family at a competitive price, it’s vital to shop around and compare policies on a like-for-like basis.
“And with cover becoming more competitive, now is a good time to ensure you’ve protected your family in the event of illness, or death.”
Shopping around could be one of the best approaches for everyone looking to save money on their Life Insurance, however if you are a smoker, then quitting the cigarettes is probably the best way for you to cut your costs in this area.
Recent survey figures revealed that the typical premium for non-smokers costs 41% less than for smokers; therefore quitting smoking remains one of the most substantial measures customers can take to reduce the cost of their life cover.
Although shopping around to get the best life insurance deals and quitting smoking provide the biggest savings to consumers, there are also other ways to reduce your life insurance costs. Some of these ways include:
Price Comparison sites – these enable you to compare many quotes in just one place on the internet as no individual website can offer this level of service. This gives you an opportunity to visit one website and select various providers to compare their levels of cover, prices and so on. Just beware as very often the cheapest life insurance policy may not offer you the best level of cover for your money.
Existing Cover – Be sure not to take out a life insurance policy if you already have one elsewhere. Many companies will provide their staff with life insurance cover, so it would not be necessary for you to spend money on something you already have in place.
Check cashback sites – If you are purchasing life insurance online then you may be able to do so via a cashback site. This means you access the insurer’s website through the cashback site and they rebate you some of the commission they receive from the company selling the life insurance.
Finally, do you actually need a life insurance policy? If you are single, have paid off your mortgage and do not have any dependants then it may be worth you saving money and not taking out any life insurance at all. In this case, it may just be worth you considering Income Protection which would provide you with cover during any sickness or an accident.

One in ten Brits add an average of £600 on to their exaggerated insurance claims meaning the rest of us pay higher premiums.
New research by AXA insurance shows that fraudulent insurance claims have risen amid the tough current economic climate in the UK.
Axa informed the insurance industry is seen as a ‘soft target’ for people looking to make quick extra cash, as British households continue to face pressure from higher living costs and the declining employment conditions.
Steve Gaywood the head of fraud at AXA, advised it was not a victimless crime which means that truthful customers are footing the bill. These bogus claims can add as much as £13 to every home insurance policy.
Mr Gaywood said ‘As an industry we are well aware that these things go on and we are introducing measures all the time to try and reduce the amount of fraud that occurs.
‘Ultimately, if consumers get caught out they run the risk of having the whole claim turned down as well as facing problems getting insurance in the future.
‘It is not a victimless crime, honest customers end up footing the bill through higher premiums as insurers pass on the additional costs of inflated claims.’
The research undertaken by AXA found that 9% of people who had made a home insurance claim in the past 5 years had over-exaggerated; typically adding an extra £607 on to the totals. This figure is up from around 7% of people who said they had increased a claim when a comparable study was carried out about a year ago.
Exaggerated claims usually relate to TV’s, jewellery or cash that never really existed and people claiming they had a freezer filled with expensive food items rather than the reality of chips and peas.
More than 1 in 10 people would be more likely to contemplate trying to increase a claim than they were 3 years ago, AXA found that men are more likely to have made an exaggerated claim and 58% of buyers feel it’s not dishonest to fail to mention previous claims when taking out a new Home Insurance policy.
Less than half of the people who took part in the survey considered an exaggerated claim to be dishonest.
Research also found that 43% of 2,000 people surveyed believe that deliberately damaging an item to make a claim was not dishonest.

Whilst the majority of the general public would not drink and drive, new research undertaken by More Th>n insurance company revealed thousands of Brits happily operate household appliances under the influence of alcohol which is causing £700m worth of damage in the process.
According to the insurance company, 83% of British adults over the age of 18 enjoy an alcoholic beverage at home after work and 61% admit they regularly get drunk indoors.
Drinking alcohol in moderation is usually harmless, but the home seems to become a hive of hazards for drunken dweller behaviour. According to the study, alcohol-related incidents cause significant damage to 1.5m homes each year.
One third of homeowners admitted to their insurance company about causing a house fire, flooding or smashing valuable items as a result of being drunk in their home.
It appears the worst offenders are middle class people, particularly aged 35 to 54-years; causing an average £242, 673 worth of damage alone. However, in total, Brits cause around £700m of damage to homes.
Matt Pernet said: “The dangers of drink driving are well documented, but the perils of being drunk in the home are not.
“Yet, as this research shows, the home can be a highly precarious place for somebody with impaired judgment. If you think you are going to be drunk at home then it pays to plan ahead.
A representative from the London Fire Brigade added: “Too many fires are started when someone has passed out and left a pizza in the oven or some bacon under the grill.
“If people are going to have a few drinks, whether at home or on a night out, then a takeaway is by far the safest option to satisfy any late-night cravings.”
Powerseeker would like to remind people this month to make sure they take out adequate Home Insurance to cover any eventualities.
Adequate Home Insurance will provide you with peace of mind that if your home is damaged it will be repaired, or if possessions are damaged or stolen you would be recompensed.

Recent research undertaken by Autonet Insurance has identified that van insurance premiums for younger drivers has reduced by up to 20% over the past year.
The study by the insurance broker identified that in January 2011 the average cost of van insurance for men aged 22 and under was £2550. In January 2012, the average cost of the same insurance premium was £2210 which is a difference of 13.5%.
Female van drivers in the same age category saw an average van insurance premium difference of 20.8%.
Stuart Scott the head of distribution at Autonet, said, “As the UK’s largest van broker we constantly review and monitor insurance premiums to make a conscious commitment to maintain competitive prices for all age and gender brackets.”
News of significantly lower premiums for female van drivers over the past 12 months comes ahead of new EU legislation being introduced at the end of this year. This will ensure that males and females will pay the same for insurance premiums.
Traditionally male van insurance polices have always cost considerably more as men are seen as a larger risk by Insurance Companies. However, the difference in costs for insurance based on gender was deemed unlawful by the European Court of Justice in March 2011. This results in the new legislation being introduced in December 2012. Some insurers started equalising premiums as soon as this judgement had been made, rather than waiting for the new law to take effect.
In final, Insurance premiums for the “White Van Man” have fallen and look set to fall even further in light of new EU equality rules.

Julie Fisher the head of home insurance at Moneysupermarket.com said, “Home is where the heart is, and there is no denying that a burglary in your home is an emotional and frightening experience,”
“However, being in a higher risk area doesn’t necessarily mean where you live is bad or rife with crime – many thieves will target more affluent areas purely for the rewards on offer.”
“Homeowners need to be extra vigilant when it comes to security – installing timers on your lights and ensuring items of value are kept away from your windows are easy steps to take to reduce risk. But you never know when an opportunistic thief may strike, so it’s crucial to ensure your home contents insurance is fully up to date, and is at a high enough level to cover all your belongings sufficiently.”
We give you 10 ways to protect your home
1. Be sure to lock all doors and windows and doors before leaving the house
2. Check your locks are in full working order. An industry standard lock can help to reduce your home insurance premiums
3. Keep valuable items out of visibility, away from the window
4. Don’t leave valuables lying about the house
5. Don’t leave your keys in an obvious place – don’t place your keys under the doormat and don’t hook them close to the door as it has been known for thieves to be able to get them through the letter box
6. Get a professionally installed and maintained alarm as it will improve your security and help to lower your home insurance premiums
7. If you can’t afford a full alarm system, then get a fake alarm box fitted as it will work as a deterrent
8. Put your lights on timers to come on at various intervals
9. Install security lighting to keep thieves at bay
10. Lay stones or gravel around the property as the crunch of gravel announces the arrival of people at your property.

Tom Tom and Motaquote have launched a new type of insurance policy which rewards sensible drivers with lower insurance premiums.
This scheme is called Fair Pay, it uses a customised Tom Tom Pro 3100 to collect data and information about how a person is driving, including any harsh cornering and sharp breaking. Fair Play claims the live feedback from the Tom Tom device will help price an insurance policy according to driving ability, rather than the customers’ postcode, gender, age or type of vehicle.
Thomas Schmidt, managing director of Tom Tom business solutions said that the move could help create “greener, safer driving”.
The Company said that if someone considers themselves to be a ‘good driver’ they could get the benefit with lower insurance premiums.
Feedback from the device can be provided to the driver in real-time using a combination of the Tom Tom sat-nav and a tracking unit which is fitted into the vehicle. Information is collected from the device and can be viewed online; including journey details and driver behavior.

On 10th February 2012, the Mail Online reported, “The AA is launching a new service which promises to cut the cost of insurance for safe drivers.
Motorists will be offered the chance to instal a small tracking device in their car which will monitor how fast they are driving.
And those who keep their speed to a minimum could save up to £850 a year on their policies.
Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance said: ‘It is likely to appeal to inexperienced drivers as well as parents, whose youngsters have their first car.
‘Parents know driving behaviour is being tracked by a system that also provides crash, breakdown and theft alerts.’
Douglas added that the system will offer drivers tips and alerts to improve their performance behind the wheel.
He told The Daily Telegraph: ‘Most people can improve their driving standard and Drivesafe can help them to do that.
‘I believe that in time, systems of this type will become increasingly widely used by drivers of all ages.’
The AA will be able to identify the exact location of the car in the event of accident or if the vehicle is stolen.
Whilst users will be able to view their performance either on their computers or courtesy of a free phone app that has been launched for smartphones.
It has emerged that a number of other insurers have launched similar products with Direct Line believed to be piloting their own technological tool.”
