It’s that time of year again where the cold snap encourages people to leave their vehicles un-attended whilst it defrosts and warms up ready for our on-ward journey.
According to previous surveys at least 47% of us in the UK are guilty of this. It’s important to make you aware at this stage that your Insurance Company may refuse to payout if your vehicle is stolen as a result of this negligence.
Be warned as opportunist thieves are on the lookout for an easy target. Around 2000 car thefts occur each year because motorists leave their vehicles to warm up during winter mornings. This equates to vehicle thieves getting away with around £12.7m worth of vehicles every year.
Claims director at swiftcover.com, Robin Reames said, “Leaving a car with keys in the ignition provides a perfect opportunity for thieves, and we as motorists are especially likely to do this at this time of year.
“People have an ‘it won’t happen to me’ attitude. However in reality, it can and does happen anywhere in the UK.”
For some, this is not just an occurrence during winter months as many motorists will leave their engine running whilst they just pop in the house to get something they forgot; or just pop in the local newsagent to pick up a paper
It doesn’t matter what reason the vehicle has been left; many insurance companies will in these circumstances nullify an insurance claim where a vehicle has been stolen with its keys left inside.
At present, it is a criminal offence to leave your car engine running when you are not in the vehicle. The offence is called ‘quitting’; t comes from the Road Traffic Act 1986.
The Road Vehicles (Constriction and Use) Regulation 1986 (SI 1986/1078) deals with the actual offence of “quitting”. It states “… that no person shall cause or permit to be on any road any motor vehicle which is not attended by a person duly licensed to drive it unless the engine is stopped and the parking brake is effectively set. Exemptions to the requirements of this Regulation as to the stopping of the engine include a fire brigade vehicle.”

I was recently speaking to a friend who used to be a taxi driver, with the phrase “used to be” being the operative words. She has recently had to quit because of the amount of money it was costing her to operate. Badge and licensing fees had risen, petrol costs are forever going up and her taxi insurance had also gone up exponentially over the past 12 months. As such, she found she could no longer afford it. This is the story of taxi drivers all over the UK at the moment.
The question remains though, how can you save money? Some taxi drivers are now cab sharing so that they are literally halving their costs and can make a decent living. Others are looking to their taxi insurance to save. It is the most obvious place to look because fuel and licensingare fixed. Look into the different policies and compare taxi insurance. That way, you can find the one that is best for you.

If you are looking for a taxi insurance policy then you may be looking at a variety of specialists in addition to the few mainstream insurers that offer taxi cover. Naturally, you will be looking at the premiums in terms of affordability and value but be sure not to neglect the policy details because if you do that then you may end up being sorry when it comes to making a claim. One particular area that you need to look at is the milage limits on the taxi insurance policy.
Many taxi insurance policies offer limited insurance policies, meaning that you have to stay inside certain mileage limits every year. This is to limit the likelihood of an accident and can end up limiting how much you can work. However, there are certain providers out there that offer unlimited mileage policies. If you think you may be working a lot and do not want to be restricted then these policies deserve consideration.

Taxi insurance is acknowledged as an absolute must for people that want to drive public or private licensed vehicles for a living. However, if you are planning on becoming a taxi driver in the near future then there are certain facts that you need to know. For a start, various local authorities have certain guidelines, such as age and years of driving experience. If you do not fit into the criteria then you will not be granted a license, which is something you should seek to gain prior to taking out taxi insurance in the first place. However, you might also not yet know that it is much like regular insurance. The more inexperienced you are, the higher your premiums are likely to be.
Although there is no way to improve your taxi insurance premiums without gaining experience, you should make sure that you are able to compare policies and premiums before you take one out. Look at specialist insurers and see what they have to offer before taking out a policy and you may well find that you can save a lot of cash.

Apparently there has been even more information released today about the rises that are expected to be brought into force by specialist and general taxi insurance providers in the coming month or so. It has been rumoured that taxi insurance specialists were about to put up their premiums before but several providers have now confirmed it. There are several reasons for this change in premium rates and it will affect every taxi driver, no matter how clean your record is.
One of the main reasons for the increase in taxi insurance is the level of inflation, which is of course on its way up right now. It is getting more and more expensive to run any car and the expenses that are being incurred by the insurance providers will be passed on as a result. All drivers should expect to see significant rises this year though so prepare to compare at Powerseeker!

Driving a taxi is a huge responsibility, as all taxi drivers are fully aware. It is also not the safest of jobs from time to time but it is a vital one. Despite that, some taxi drivers are cutting corners in the recession and putting their passengers’ safety and their low taxi insurance premiums in jeopardy. According to recent research, some drivers are leaving essential maintenance and thus are not keeping their taxis in top condition.
No matter what vehicle you drive, it is important to make sure that you regularly maintain it to ensure that it is fit for purpose and will not cause any accidents as a result of bald tyres, loose nuts and bolts, worn brake pads or anything else that may cause damage. Taxi insurance premiums only stay low for those that make an effort with their vehicles so make sure that you are one of them.

If you have been with the same home insurance provider for years then the likelihood is that you have no idea what an application for a brand new policy looks like and you may well find that there are a few things on there that surprise you. One of them is a question concerning your local area. More specifically, it is a question as to whether or not your home is in a neighbourhood watch area.
If your home is in a neighbourhood watch area then you will find that your home insurance premiums will be reduced on those that you would be offered should you live outside of a neighbourhood watch area. The idea is that it gives you more security and reduces the chances that your home will be broken into so you absolutely have to check out the availability of home watch groups within your area and make a saving if you can.

If you are one of those people considering starting a taxi company as a result of losing your job in the recession then there are certain key elements of information that you should know ahead of time. The first is how expensive setting up can be. Not only do you have to fork out for the license and the car itself but then you have to considert road tax, taxi insurance and all of those other extra costs that can make starting a new business very expensive.
Taxi insurance may well be more expensive than you think. This is largely because you will have no no claims discount, no matter how good your driving record. Only that earned from taxi insurance policies counts, although you may find discounts available to you if your record is prviously good. Few companies offer this discount but it is worth looking into.

Now I know how the title of this article may appear but it really isn’t as it seems! Taxi drivers don’t drink alcohol on the job because it’s more than their livlihood is worth but what about tea, coffee, water or any other drink you may have without alcoholic content? As your taxi is effectiovely your office you’re entitled to a drink, right? Not when you’re on the road you’re not!
The government will soon be bringing in measure by which you automatically get points on your license if you are caught so much as sipping your morning coffee on the road. This could spell serious trouble for your taxi insurance because it could drive it up as much as a speeding offense would. As such, it will be necessary to pull over to take a swig of water in the coming years. Keep your eye out for news of this change. It may not enter law but if it does then you should be prepared for it.
