What factors affect my home contents insurance premium?
There are many aspects that can affect your home insurance premium, some of which are:
- Correct in and around your property
- Your current "No Claims Bonus"
- How much you are covering
- The area in which you live
- Smoke Detectors, Fire Blankets & Extinguishers
- Neighbourhood Watch Schemes
- Extra items covered away from home
There are a number a things you can do to get cheaper home insurance and are quite simple. The first would be to make an appointment with the police. They will happily visit your house and carry out a security check. They will be able to give you advice on the relevant security required for your home and even advise you of local neighbourhood watch representatives and leaders.
Owning a dog is always a good way of keeping your house more secure as you will always be alerted when anyone enters your property.
Amount of insurance cover required for home contents
Buy yourself a notebook and as we mentioned above, list items per room with their respective value. Try to be as accurate as possible as leaving things out of the same nature throughout your house can add up to a serious overall loss.
Look at the smallprint or terms & conditions of the insurer as they may not insure items away from the home or items over a certain value. This would mean the added expense of either extra or if you ignored the smallprint then you could again be in for a serious loss.
An important factor to consider is to keep all your receipts for your more expensive items together in one place preferable out of harms way as you may need proof of purchase should you be unlucky and lose everything.
